Sea..Spoon??..Sculpture??

Most of you know that I work in sculpture and jewellery- the techniques, materials, aesthetics, and concepts I use always play back and forth amongst these two areas of my work. There’s a lot of discussion in the art world surrounding what differentiates craft (ex. Jewellery) and fine art (ex. Sculpture), and one of these is the idea of functionality. A lot of people describe my sculpture as craft-like and my jewellery as sculptural😂🤦‍♀️ I don’t mind being in that in-between world, and wanted to create a piece that borders back and forth along that line of “jewellery” and “sculpture”. I found out last semester that I really enjoy making spoons so I figured “why not make a ridiculous spoon- one that can stand as a sculpture but too closely resembles a spoon to be a sculpture, and one that people are hesitant to touch despite a utensil existing for the purpose of function”.
I aimed for this through the materials and processes of creating. I used silver as it is used in the field of jewellery, a handle carved from marble that acts as the “plinth” of the piece- something soft and comfortable in your hand which you’re scared to touch (which is what the plinth/gallery setting does), also because marble is a crucial material in the history of sculpture, glass beads I made, found pieces of coral and sea aluminum (which I believe to be overflow from sand casting; another sculpture thing), and scrap pieces of silver I’ve saved from casting in the jewellery studio which I remelted down into an ingot which I then rolled out multiple times to saw out a spoon shape and use holloware techniques to give it dimension. (Quick summary of techniques used: casting, lampwork, wire wrapping, beading, soldering, metalsmithing, carving)
Aesthetically I wanted to create something playful/whimsical and took my inspiration from the sea- using colours, texture, found materials, and movement that is reminiscent of it, because I think water encapsulates fluidity- both in the way that the universe operates as well as how our notions of our reality change dependent on our perspective. Line of Flow is a piece created within and surrounding ideas of the flow state, and inspired by the notions of images and objects. The gateway to this project began with large-scale automatic drawings, in which I released the inclination to create aesthetically-pleasing artworks by surrendering control to my body and drawing medium. By being fully-immersed in each moment of the process through physical engagement rather than being concerned with the outcome, the direction, weight, and fluidity of the line-work was determined by the motion of my body and handling of charcoal, which was dictated by intuition and presence.

These preliminary works were produced as a method to repetitively enter the flow-state, as well as to act as substructures to inspire the fabrication of a three-dimensional object. In attempts to honour both the visual similarities and energy within these drawings, steel pencil rod was chosen, as its surface colour, texture, and thickness resembled the quality of charcoal lines drawn, as well as its durable yet finicky materiality which requires those who work with it to create consciously and intuitively. The translation of these images into an object through the concentration of a single line both on paper and in a three-dimensional space was created through physical movements that were mirrored in both creation processes (such as the pulling and pushing to make bends in the wire, parallel to the dragging and pushing of charcoal to make curved lines on the page) all completed while in a state of flow.

Stemming from the ground and floating above eye level not only resembles the heights in which I completed these drawings, but implies that this line/state of being extends beyond what we physically see. Through the navigation around this piece, the viewer can get lost within the work dictated through physical movement, which will hopefully invoke the same sense of presence, wonder, appreciation, and peace I had while creating and engaging with this Line of Flow.

Stumbled Upon Sculptures is an ongoing series of small sculptures (currently 33) created using found objects, scrap metals, and material tests that I have collected and saved over the years. I have always had a deep appreciation for organic objects- I believe that each of their unique essences and materiality embodies and contains evidence of the beauty, harmony, and interconnectivity that is within our universe.

When I collect objects, I never seek them out with intent, but rather happen to cross paths with them unexpectedly throughout my daily existence. I placed these sculptures in areas I frequently walk through (downtown Halifax, the waterfront, and Point Pleasant Park), and in spaces in which, contextually are seemingly out of place, but make sense through shared aesthetics and energies. By putting these pieces in spots where they are both hidden yet obtrusive, those who find them will be taken by surprise, and hopefully filled with feelings of joy, curiosity, and appreciation for not only the object, but the experience.

Much like the objects and materials used, the sculptural works within this series individually exist, while remaining a part of a larger body of work, and are all codependent on their counterparts, environments, and interactions. By spreading into the world and travelling through the interactions of others both in the physical and digital realms, the synergistic ways in which we operate as individuals and as a collective amongst ourselves and environments, whether we are consciously or unknowingly engaged, is resembled.
